“We’re Getting Short On Time” – Bills May Cut Former 2024 Draft Bust

August 14, 2025 by Last Word On Pro Football

After a disastrous rookie campaign, the Buffalo Bills may cut safety draft pick Cole Bishop before the new regular season starts. According to a report, head coach Sean McDermott isn’t happy with the outcome of his potential starting safety, as the team has high expectations for Bishop to excel in Buffalo. However, the safety hasn’t been able to live up to the hype after just starting in just four games last year and has been struggling with injuries this offseason, missing a huge part of practice. Originally selected as a second-round pick, the former Utah product might find himself on borrowed time as Taylor Rapp and Damar Hamlin have taken over as the presumptive starters entering the 2025 campaign.

McDermott isn’t sure what they will get out of Boshop this upcoming season, but they can’t afford to lose the depth either way. It’s not typical for an NFL team to move on early from a disastrous rookie unless you’re the Carolina Panthers, trading Jonathan Mingo to the Dallas Cowboys. However, once Bishop is back to full health, he will be battling for the full-time position against Hamlin. Although the safety has some competition that is creeping up behind him, which is fifth-round rookie Jordan Hancock, who impressed the team in their first preseason game.

Potential Next Teams

New Orleans Saints

The New Orleans Saints are walking into fire this upcoming regular season while having one of the worst offenses in the league, led by either Tyler Shough or Spencer Rattler. This means the team will likely need to lean on its defense to make most of its plays, so they must have an adequate secondary unit to turn the ball over and put whoever their starting quarterback will be in the best position. After losing Tyrann Mathieu to retirement, the Saints luckily found a fast replacement in Julian Blackmon, but they could use the presence of Cole Bishop in the background to establish himself to learn even behind one of the former Kansas City greats, Justin Reid.

Dallas Cowboys

Meanwhile, the Dallas Cowboys might be looking to move on from Donovan Wilson after the 2025 regular season. They don’t have the financial means to compensate for his next deal, and given that they gave Markquese Bell a contract before Wilson could signal a departure. Malik Hooker is still a standout ballhawk in the secondary unit, but the Cowboys love rolling the dice on guys still in their rookie deals, so Cole Bishop might be an option to work his way up in this department.

Los Angeles Chargers

However, the Los Angeles Chargers will probably have one of the most successful secondaries in the league despite the loss of Kristian Fulton this offseason. Donte Jackson and Benjamin St-Juste are the newcomers, while Alohi Gilman and Derwin James are returning. Cole Bishop could fit into some type of role as a backup and help Tony Jefferson and Elijah Molden.

Baltimore Ravens

The Baltimore Ravens are putting all their eggs in a basket and hoping that 2025 rookie Malaki Starks can have a breakout season. However, they did lose Ar’Darius Washington, and they need to find some type of replacement. The Bills will never trade any of their talent to the Ravens, but if Bishop becomes a free agent, the Ravens could sneak in and sign him to become a worthy backup candidate once he’s healthy.
