The Saints haven’t enjoyed the best track record in the NFL draft with Sean Payton calling the shots. With the exception of once-in-a-generation hauls in 2006 and 2017, results have ranged from forgettable to best-forgotten. More than a few players have landed in New Orleans and struggled to pan out. So here’s a quick recap of each offseason’s worst draft pick since Payton was hired to coach the team. In some years, “worst” is relative — the Saints drafted very well in 2016 and 2017, leaving part-time starters like Vonn Bell and Alex Anzalone with the short straw compared to their superstar teammates. Generally the decision focused on prospects who were drafted higher than their peers, thus receiving greater expectations, which some of them have failed to meet.
