An important voice in the locker room

Since Tyler Shough was drafted in the second-round of the 2024 NFL Draft, the topic of a quarterback competition in New Orleans has been heavily discussed. Players, analysts, and fans have been giving their opinions on who is winning, what the coaching staff is doing with these players, and how close the competition is. Recently, SiriusXM NFL Radio had an interview with New Orleans Saints veteran TE Foster Moreau, in which he presented his view on the starting quarterback competition.

Some Important Quotes:

“Genuinely, we have a full-blown 33, 33, 33 percent quarterback competition between those three guys (Tyler Shough, Spencer Rattler, and Jake Haener).”

When examining some of the comments we have seen throughout this offseason, it is not surprising to hear players or coaches discuss just how close it is, but it is interesting to note the inclusion of Jake Haener. Many people seem to have written off Haener in this competition and feel that the battle is really just between Tyler Shough and Spencer Ratter. Still, players like Moreau and even head coach Kellen Moore have made it known that Haener is equally a part of this battle.

“It’s anyone’s job for the taking.”

This quote continues with the sentiment of just how close the competition is, and how vital training camp and the preseason will be for these three quarterbacks.

“I don’t think this front office is just going to hand him (Tyler Shough) the keys, I think he is truly going to have to prove it.”

When Moreau was asked about his interactions with Tyler Shough, the points of the Saints using a second-round pick on the rookie and how the front office might have some desire for him to be the starter were brought up. Moreau reassured that he really does not see the Saints just giving Shough the job without making him earn it in this competition. This is something that has stayed true throughout practices already, and with how close the battle is for the starting spot, this may go down to the wire.
