Should the Saints hire Mike McCarthy?

New Orleans have shown interest in the former Packers and Cowboys Head Coach.

As we all know, the New Orleans Saints are in the midst of their head coach search, and one name who has recently become available is former Dallas Cowboys Head Coach Mike McCarthy.

McCarthy, who won Super Bowl XLV with the Packers in 2011, and the Cowboys came to a mutual agreement to part ways after his contract expired. He got into the game late, but he has already received interest from the Bears and Saints, who are expected to meet with him early next week, per reports.

Former #Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy is also expected to speak with the #Saints early next week, sources say. No firm date established, but that is the plan. A key candidate in both spots. https://t.co/0umyQFUNKY

There have been some…mixed reactions to the news that the Saints will be interested in McCarthy. There are fans who want absolutely nothing to do with him because of the lack of recent playoff success, but then there’s fans who saw him go 12-5 three straight years with Dak Prescott at quarterback and start to think maybe he could turn things around in New Orleans.

I’ll admit, at first, I was not a fan of this news. All I saw was a perennial playoff loser, but then I remembered that the Saints haven’t been to the playoffs in four years, so who am I to judge a coach by his playoff success when he’s actually been there each of the last three years (outside of 2024) and won a much tougher division twice during that span?

Is he my first pick? No, absolutely not. Aaron Glenn and Joe Brady are the two guys I think should be at the top of the Saints list, and I would possibly even take Kellen Moore over him (not quite sold on that, but I think taking a shot at a young offensive guy isn’t a bad idea), but McCarthy has proven he can do two things: lead a good offense and at least get to the playoffs.

The more I sit on it, the better I feel about the possibility of the Saints signing McCarthy, but I don’t think I’ll ever feel good about it. There are better options out there, but if Glenn goes to the Jets and Brady stays in Buffalo/goes elsewhere, then I think (please don’t hate me for saying this) McCarthy could be the best realistic option left.
