Drew Brees officially announced his retirement back in March. The legendary New Orleans Saints quarterback officially called it a career following weeks of speculation about his decision.

“After 20 years as a player in the NFL and 15 years as a Saint, it is time I retire from the game of football,” he wrote. “Each day, I poured my heart & soul into being your Quarterback. Til the very end, I exhausted myself to give everything I had to the Saints organization, my team, and the great city of New Orleans.

“We shared some amazing moments together, many of which are emblazoned in our hearts and minds and will forever be a part of us. You have molded me, strengthened me, inspired me, and given me a lifetime of memories. My goal for the last 15 years was striving to give to you everything you had given to me and more.”

While Brees’ retirement has been official for weeks, it hasn’t full hit Sean Payton yet.

The Saints’ head coach shared an honest admission about his feelings on Brees’ retirement.

“We’re not there yet because we haven’t had any practices, we haven’t turned around with something coming up where we’re like, That’s something Drew would’ve handled. We haven’t had that moment yet,” Payton told Albert Breer of SI.com.

“I’m sure there’ll be a few of them. But it’s a young team, that’s what’s exciting. . . . I think it’ll be different the first time we have an OTA, the first time we have a minicamp or the first time we get into training camp,” Payton added. “It hasn’t hit you quite yet because you haven’t done anything football-related. You’re involved in draft work, free-agent work. I’m sure there’ll be a couple stages to it where it’s the first meeting, first practice and so on.”

The Saints are expected to start Jameis Winston or Taysom Hill at quarterback in 2021.
