Saints Reportedly Make Decision On LB Kwon Alexander

Kwon Alexander gets carted off.

With the New Orleans Saints more than $50 million over the salary cap right now, tough cuts need to be made in the days to come. Unfortunately for linebacker Kwon Alexander, he’s going to be one of those cuts.

According to NFL insider Ian Rapoport, Alexander is slated to be cut in the coming days. The move is a fairly necessary one as cutting him saves the Saints $13 million in cap space with no dead money.

New Orleans acquired Alexander in a trade with the San Francisco 49ers this past year. But a torn Achilles limited him to seven games with his new team before being placed on IR in December.

Rapoport reported that Alexander should be good to go for the start of training camp though. But coming off an injury like that, it’s hard to know what kind of market he’ll have.

The #Saints are expected to release LB Kwon Alexander in the coming days, source said, a move that saves them more than $13M against the salary cap with no dead money. Alexander is recovering from a torn Achilles, but will be ready for the start of training camp.

Kwon Alexander was a fourth round pick by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the 2015 NFL Draft. He quickly earned a central role in the Tampa Bay defense, starting 46 games at middle linebacker in his first four seasons and making the Pro Bowl in 2017.

Alexander became a free agent in 2019 and signed a four-year, $54 million contract with the 49ers. But after playing in just eight games that year, the 49ers shipped him to New Orleans for a fifth-round pick this past November.

Injuries have been a real problem for Alexander in his young career. He’s played a grand total of 26 games over the past three years.

But with a Pro Bowl to his name, some team out there is bound to see his potential.

If he’s as healthy as Ian Rapoport says he is, he’ll be a presence in training camp this summer.
