With the 2022 NFL Draft complete, most teams have already made their major offseason transactions. However, Tyrann Mathieu remains one of the game’s most high-profile unsigned free agents.
Now that teams have a clearer sense of their lingering needs, the three-time All-Pro safety could draw reinvigorated interest from his hometown organization.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the New Orleans Saints are expected to re-visit negotiations with the Honey Badger and “make an aggressive push” to sign the LSU alum.
After failing to land a safety during the draft, the Saints now are expected to re-visit their talks with free-agent Pro-Bowl safety Tyrann Mathieu and make an aggressive push to try to add him to their roster, per sources. Mathieu was born and raised in New Orleans.

Saints reporter Nick Underhill confirmed Schefter’s report and added that it “would not be a surprise” to see a deal happen next week.
This is true. The Saints have maintained their interest in Tyrann Mathieu throughout the offseason. Seeing something happen next week would not be a surprise. https://t.co/gCJbjyxwnb

Last month, Mathieu told The Advocate’s Wilson Alexander that joining the Saints “would be a great opportunity” even though he didn’t think their top-notch defense necessarily needed him. However, his position stands out as an area for improvement.
Although Marcus Williams signed the Baltimore Ravens, New Orleans didn’t select any safeties with its five draft picks. The Saints focused on offense early, selecting wide receive Chris Olave and offensive tackle Trevor Penning in the first round.
The pairing makes sense for both sides. New Orleans can replace Williams with a ball-hawking defensive back while Mathieu can return home to seek another Super Bowl ring.
