Veteran safety Tyrann Mathieu is the latest player on the Saints to restructure his contract.
According to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network, the Saints have restructured Mathieu’s deal to clear $4.668 million in cap space for the 2023 season.
For the past few years, the Saints have performed cap space gymnastics to get under the threshold. This offseason will be no different.
By restructuring Mathieu’s contract, the Saints have essentially confirmed that he’ll be on their roster for the 2023 season.
Mathieu started every game for the Saints this past season, racking up 91 combined tackles, eight pass deflections, three interceptions and one forced fumble.
Now that Mathieu’s contract has been taken care of, the Saints must go back to the drawing board to figure out what other moves can be made.
The Saints have already created cap space by reworking the contracts of Marcus Maye, Erik McCoy, Ryan Ramczyk and Wil Lutz.
