Saints Latest Quarterback Decision Has Fans Buzzing

Jameis Winston and Taysom Hill celebrating a New Orleans Saints play.

Who’s going to replace Drew Brees in New Orleans? That’s the question that every Saints fan wants answered this offseason.

Saints head coach Sean Payton has stated multiple times that Taysom Hill and Jameis Winston will compete for the starting job during training camp. And yet, fans decided to overreact when they heard Hill was receiving the first-team reps on Thursday and Friday.

Well, fans might want to retract their recent overreactions because New Orleans is now giving Winston a chance to show what he can do with the starters.

“As Sean Payton said yesterday, Jameis Winston is now taking his turn in the rotation as the Saints’ starting quarterback today,” ESPN’s Mike Triplett reported. “Expect that rotation with Taysom Hill to continue well into camp.”

Judging by Saints fans’ reactions on Twitter, they seem very pleased that Winston is running the first-team offense this Saturday.

“I didn’t know this was a debate? Winston should absolutely be QB 1 this year,” one fan tweeted. “Excited to see what he brings to the squad.”

While there are concerns about Winston’s ability to take care of the football, his arm talent and experience at quarterback can’t be denied. He certainly has the edge over Hill in those departments.

Winston has been called a turnover machine over the course of his NFL career, but he has a golden opportunity in front of him to change that narrative.

During an interview earlier this year on the ‘Huddle & Flow’ podcast, Winston said he’s learning how to be more of a game manager.

“I never wanted to be deemed a game manager,” Winston said. “But really, that game manager is not a bad piece. That’s something that I think just comes with being a professional quarterback. Being able to not just only do the things that you can do, but being able to do the things that you should not do — like what not to do versus what can I do.”

Winston can show that he’s learned from his past mistakes with a strong showing at camp.
