Saints go back to defense in NFL.com 3-round mock

The Saints select a defensive player in all three rounds.

Another mock draft, another position targeted by the New Orleans Saints.

We’ve seen safety. We’ve seen quarterback.

Now, the New Orleans Saints go back to bringing in help on the defense with the 28th pick in the 2021 NFL Draft from NFL.com.

Sheldon Rankins, the Saints’ first-round pick five years ago, could be replaced by another if the veteran finds greener pastures elsewhere in free agency. Onwuzurike’s clearly the top 3-technique tackle in this draft.

It’s hard to argue too much with the logic here as the Saints lack of a pass rush late in the season was clearly apparent and could be in part to blame for the team’s early exit in the 2021 postseason.

Of note, safety Trevon Moehrig was still available by the 28th pick from Mel Kiper’s draft, but quarterback Mac Jones from CBS Sports’ draft went off the board with the 14th pick to Washington. That meant that Florida quarterback Kyle Trask was still available as well with this pick.

But NFL.com’s draft was a three-round mock, and Trask didn’t leave the board until the third round, 78th overall.

The Saints added Pittsburgh cornerback Asante Samuel Jr. with the 60th overall selection.

With projected third round compensatory picks, the Saints grabbed Duke linebacker Baron Browning with the 102nd pick and Georgia safety Ar’Darius Washington with the 106th pick. Safety Trevon Moehrig was selected 40th overall by the Denver Broncos.

So what says you, Who Dat Nation? Would you be happy with this mock draft? Presumably this draft assumes the Saints have addressed the quarterback position in free agency or surely the team would have drafted someone like Trask in the second round or traded up to grab a quarterback in the first round.
