The damage from Hurricane Ida to the city of New Orleans has put just about all sporting events in the area on hold for the time being. The New Orleans Saints’ season opener against the Green Bay Packers may be affected too.

Speaking to the media this week, Saints general manager Mickey Loomis addressed the status of the game. He said that no decision has been finalized on the location of the opener as of yet.

Loomis also dismissed speculation that the game might be played at a college football stadium such as LSU’s Tiger Stadium or Alabama’s Bryant-Denny Stadium. He pointed out that league rules will require that the game be played in an NFL stadium.

NFL stadiums are among the only venues in the country that have sufficient wiring for an NFL game. But finding a local NFL venue where the game can be played may still be a problem.

In Week 1, the Atlanta Falcons, Carolina Panthers, Tennessee Titans and Houston Texans all have home games. The Dallas Cowboys don’t play that Sunday, but AT&T Stadium is scheduled to host a concert.

Florida might be the Saints’ best bet at a nearby NFL venue as both the Jacksonville Jaguars and Miami Dolphins have road games that weekend.

This is hardly the first time that hurricanes have disrupted the Saints’ season. They were forced to play every game in 2005 on the road in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina that year. But back then, the Saints were able to play games at college venues.

Where should the Saints play their season-opener against the Packers?
