While it’s become almost accepted at this point that Taysom Hill will start the 2021 season as the New Orleans Saints’ starting quarterback, Jameis Winston isn’t giving up the QB battle without a fight. And so far, he’s giving Hill all he can handle.
On Monday, Saints insider Nick Underhill declared that Winston “had the best practice of any QB since camp started.” While it is just practice, the report quickly whipped up the Saints fanbase.
Jameis Winston got a bit of a raw deal with the Saints last year. Hill got all three of the starts in place of an injured Drew Brees, but did precious little as a passer and much more as a runner.
Winston finished the season with only a handful of passing attempts. Brees retired after the season, leaving Hill and Winston to compete for the starting job.
Saints fans and Winston fans on Twitter are collectively very happy to see the former Heisman winner performing well in camp:

Prior to joining the Saints in 2020, Winston was a five-year starter for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He set numerous franchise records after going No. 1 overall in the 2015 NFL Draft.
But turnovers and poor coaching ultimately cost him his job and his roster spot.
While Winston has yet to start since the Buccaneers let him walk, there’s a good chance he’ll get some redemption this year.
But Taysom Hill isn’t just going to let Winston take the starting job. Winston has to work for it a lot harder than he has before.
