Saints Are Reportedly Signing A Veteran Cornerback

Since the start of free agency in the spring, the New Orleans Saints have been on the lookout for depth at cornerback. They added to that position group today just a few days before the start of the regular season.

According to Ian Rapoport, the Saints hosted veteran cornerback Desmond Trufant for a workout on Monday and are now expected to sign him. The 30-year-old veteran briefly had an opportunity with the Chicago Bears this summer, but didn’t make the 53-man roster and has been a free agent for the last week.

Trufant last played six games for the Detroit Lions in 2020, racking up 20 tackles, a sack and an interception. However, an injury ended his season early and the organization released him in March.

2020 marked the second year in a row that Trufant missed a significant number of games due to injury, but when he is healthy, he’s proven that he can still play at a high level. The Saints will need him to plug-in right away in their thin secondary.

It’s unclear where Trufant will come in on the depth chart with just six days to go until the Saints season opener. Marshon Lattimore will lead the team’s secondary on one side, but a question mark remains at the other cornerback position.

Rookie Paulson Adebo and veteran Ken Crawley both are potential options for Sean Payton, but neither has made a strong enough impression to ease the worries of the coaching staff.

It’s been eight years since Trufant came off the board in the first round of the 2013 NFL Draft and six seasons since he made his lone Pro Bowl in 2015. The best of his playing days might be behind him, but perhaps he can still make an impact in New Orleans.
