The New Orleans Saints have four players battling for the starting quarterback job: Tyler Shough, Spencer Rattle, Jake Haener, and undrafted free agent Hunter Dekkers. While most around the league believe second-round rookie Tyler Shough will start the season, Saints tight end Foster Moreau says that all four players have an equal shot at the job.
“I don’t think this front office is just going to hand him [Tyler Shough] the keys. I think he’s truly going to have to prove it,” Moreau said during a recent appearance on Sirius XM NFL Radio.
“Most of the time, you kind of feel like guys really have an edge on the other…Genuinely, we really do have a full-blown, 33, 33, 33 percent competition [among] those three guys. We’ve even got another guy, Hunter Dekkers, is a lefty, and he can really spin it, too, to be honest with you.”

Foster Moreau: Saints Quarterback Job Truly Up For Grabs
Perhaps the Saints are truly giving each quarterback a chance to fight for the job, but everyone should be disappointed if Tyler Shough doesn’t win the battle. A surprise second-round pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, Shough’s selection made a lot more sense following Derek Carr’s injury-based retirement. While the Saints don’t have the roster to seriously compete for the playoffs, they should spend the year determining if Shough has what it takes to be a franchise quarterback.
With Carr retired, Spencer Rattler is the most experienced starter on the team. While he showed moments of promise as a rookie, he ultimately finished the year with a 0-6 record while completing 57.0% of his passes for 1,317 yards, four touchdowns, and five interceptions. Jake Haener has made one start through his first two seasons, completing 18 of his 39 attempts for 226 yards, one touchdown, and one interception.
