Report: Eagles May Trade Possible Breakout Candidate – 4 Potential Next Teams

June 6, 2025 by Last Word On Pro Football

After trading away Bryce Huff this past week, the Philadelphia Eagles could trade potential breakout player Sydney Brown. Bleacher Report’s Gary Davenport believes the safety is the best trade candidate for the defending Super Bowl champions since Brown faces a battle to earn a role in the secondary unit. It will become difficult for Brown to return from his ACL injury last year after the Eagles got safety Andrew Mukuba in this year’s draft. Still, the source believes this upcoming season, Brown could have a breakout year if he can stay healthy.

Originally selected in the third round of the 2023 NFL Draft, the former Illinois product had a lot of potential coming into the league, but couldn’t take advantage after playing just six games that year. Brown finally came back in October last year and was playing sparingly in 2024, amassing just seven tackles in 79 snaps. Cooper DeJean and Quinyon Mitchell were the highlight of this massive secondary unit, so it’s no surprise that the Eagles didn’t want to risk losing Brown again to another injury. There’s still a lot of faith for Brown entering this 2025 campaign, and he has the skills to prove that he can be versatile, but the biggest question is if he can stay healthy.

However, none of that will matter if Mukuba wins the job during NFL Training Camp, and the Eagles won’t be afraid to trade away a piece that doesn’t fit into their puzzle. After winning the Super Bowl recently, they could send Brown to another team if the Eagles don’t have any use for him anymore.

Potential Destinations

Baltimore Ravens

This might be a game-changing move for the Baltimore Ravens, but they never fail to bring out the best talent in a secondary athlete. After losing Ar’Darius Washington this offseason to a gruesome injury, the Ravens shouldn’t bet all of their cash on 2025 draft pick Malaki Starks. He needs some relief as he won’t excel well if he has full-time duties quickly. Nate Wiggins adjusted in one year, so they could afford someone like Brown to fill the depth behind Starks and give Kyle Hamilton some armory in his arsenal for this secondary.

Los Angeles Chargers

Meanwhile, the Los Angeles Chargers’ secondary will look dramatically different than last year. No one is taking Alohi Gilman or Derwin James Jr.’s job this upcoming year, but since the Chargers have the financial means, they should continue to revamp this safety unit. Elijah Molden is a solid backup that’s emerging into a starter, but the same can’t be said for Tony Jefferson, even though he signed a new contract. Brown is a safety net trade piece that can streamline the unit.

Carolina Panthers

However, the Panthers have done phenomenally well bolstering the defense, and they’re in good business with Bryce Young on offense, with plenty of new upcoming weapons to work with. This doesn’t mean they’re done yet, as new signee Trevon Moehrig could use some reinforcements. Brown might not be ready for full-time right now, but if he gets a fresh start in a different place, he might change the organization to put the secondary from dead last to having a fighting chance.

New Orleans Saints

The New Orleans Saints are more in dire need of a cornerback, but it doesn’t mean they shouldn’t continue to upgrade the safety department. The team signed Justin Reid to give veteran Tyrann Mathieu a new fresh breath of air, but he’s expendable this season, and the Saints could look to trade the long-time safety. If that happens, no matter if they decide to trade him, they should get Brown a part of the roster to be a three-headed explosive unit.
