Report: Cowboys Urged to Trade For Top Offensive Weapon

July 17, 2025 by Last Word On Pro Football

Despite making attempts to salvage the running back unit, one report suggests the Dallas Cowboys should trade for top backfield weapon Kyren Williams. According to the source, they believe Dallas should make a run for Williams even though they already have plenty of depth at the position. While Williams won’t be going anywhere this upcoming 2025 campaign, after the Los Angeles Rams gave former Todd Gurley a contract extension years ago, they could think twice about giving Williams a new deal. Gurley couldn’t get back to his old self after suffering multiple injuries and now remains out of the league after failing to meet the expectations of any NFL team, and that is what the Rams are trying to avoid.

With that, the team could be open to trading Williams at the right price. However, the running back isn’t looking to move on as he’s putting in extra work this offseason, as he remains patient, which the Rams are reportedly appreciative of. This doesn’t mean his job his safe and the Rams won’t consider the idea of trading him to a new team. It doesn’t feel shocking if the trade happens, as the roster did trade themselves out of the first round of this year’s draft, so it seems like the Rams might be heading in a different direction in the next few years.

Originally selected in the fifth round of the 2022 NFL Draft, the former Notre Dame product became the first running back since Gurley in 2018 to surpass 1,000 rushing yards during the 2023 season, so the Cowboys won’t be the only ones who might be targeting Williams, as these other three rosters could trade for him.

Report: Cowboys Urged to Trade For Top Offensive Weapon Kyren Williams – 3 Logical Suitors That Could Intervene

Possible Destinations

Baltimore Ravens

Despite giving veteran Derrick Henry another contract extension, it doesn’t guarantee he will have the same gas as before. He is getting older, and that means the production might be slower than before. With that, the Ravens should start thinking about the future of their running back department at least after the 2025 campaign. Even though there’s been a lot of confidence surrounding Keaton Mitchell, he hasn’t had one single season to back up that he could be a reliable backup for the Ravens.

Perhaps, they could trade for Williams in the middle of the season if they want to boost their postseason chances. This will only happen if the Rams are enduring a losing campaign, and that might be what makes Lamar Jackson into an exploding quarterback that no one has seen before, since he loves to run the football.

Washington Commanders

Meanwhile, the Washington Commanders are no longer a rebuilding roster as they have their future signal-caller in Jayden Daniels, and they’re maximizing his contract as much as they can. The wide receiver department might look muddy between losing Noah Brown, and with the Terry McLaurin contract drama, but they can’t ignore upgrading the running back unit. Brian Robinson Jr. and Austin Ekeler have been average at best in their form, so they need a boost, and a guy like Williams could give Daniels a new, fresh breath of air in the backfield.

New Orleans Saints

Just like the Baltimore Ravens, the New Orleans Saints have a superstar running back, but old in Alvin Kamara. Despite signing Cam Akers in an attempt to give him some backup after releasing Jamaal Williams, they need a viable option to hopefully take over if Kamara requests a trade or if the two depart. Kyren Williams could be the athlete to keep the offense intact.
