Overreactions: Saints vs. Falcons

November 30, 2023 by Canal Street Chronicles

NFL: New Orleans Saints at Atlanta Falcons
Brett Davis-USA TODAY Sports

Another bad loss has the fanbase fuming.

The New Orleans Saints suffered another miserable loss against a division rival, falling to the Atlanta Falcons 24-15 at Mercedes Benz Stadium.

A game that felt over pretty early on even though the score was close, the Saints never found the endzone as Blake Grupe kicked five field goals to give them their 15 points.

Now, the Saints sit at 5-6 and have lost first place in the NFC South. If it wasn’t clear before, it’s been made painfully obvious that the Black and Gold have some serious issues that they need to figure out and the fanbase is starting to get fed up.

Let’s look at some of the key overreactions from this game.

Carr isn’t the guy for the Saints

I’m starting to think this is correct.

For the first couple of games that he didn’t play well, I’d say “he’s still adapting to the new system” or “play calling has been poor” which is still true. However, two things can be true at once. Derek Carr simply may not be the right quarterback for the Saints. The problem is that he has a $150M contract through the end of 2027 with the earliest Mickey Loomis could get out is 2025 with a $12M dead cap.

He’s missing his receivers, taking too long to do anything with the football, and doesn’t know how to leave the pocket and evade the rush. In today’s NFL, you can’t be a statue quarterback, which is what Carr is. Either the Saints have to make protecting him a priority, make the playbook fit his style better, or get a different quarterback.

The Saints need to fire everyone

A lot of people are saying this, and I think they may be right.

The coaching staff that is currently in place is clearly not looking. You’ve already lost six games with one of the easier schedules in the league and in the games that you have won, you haven’t looked very convincing (outside of New England but they’re atrocious).

I think it is time for a change in the coaching staff. Dennis Allen, Pete Carmichael, Joe Woods, etc. Basically, if their job title ends with the word coach or coordinator, it’s time to go. The Saints need to find a head coach from outside the organization that will build his staff the way that he wants it and that he sees fit. Now, sometimes starting fresh like this doesn’t work. But I can almost guarantee that fans will be willing to work with a coaching staff going through a rebuild rather than one that still believes that the team can compete for a Super Bowl when that window closed three years ago.
