All signs point towards the New Orleans Saints selecting a quarterback in the 2025 NFL Draft, but nobody knows who it will be. While Derek Carr is under contract, the longtime veteran could miss the upcoming season with a shoulder injury and appears to be at odds with the organization. Even if Carr suits up in 2025, he probably won’t be back in 2026. First-year head coach Kellen Moore will try to shape the team in his image, and that starts with finding a young passer who could be the long-term answer under center.
While Miami’s Cam Ward is the unquestioned QB1 in this class, he won’t make it past the Tennessee Titans. This leaves Colorado’s Shedeur Sanders and Ole Miss’ Jaxson Dart as the most likely draft candidates for the Saints quarterback position. According to Sport Illustrated‘s Albert Breer, the Saints have done more work on Dart than Sanders, suggesting they have him higher on their board and will pursue him when the NFL Draft officially begins later in the week.
REPORT: Saints More Likely to Draft Quarterback Jaxson Dart, Pass on Shedeur Sanders
While every team’s draft board looks a little different, consensus has Sanders as the QB2 and Dart as QB3 in this admittedly weak group of quarterbacks. However, this could work in the Saints favor, as ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports the team doesn’t want to draft a quarterback with the ninth-overall pick. While both players will likely be available when New Orleans is first on the clock, Dart has a higher chance of being available at the back of the first round. At this point, the team could trade up to secure a potential franchise quarterback while still landing an elite prospect with their top-10 selection.
Jaxson Dart put up great numbers at Ole Miss and has the physical tools to succeed in the NFL. However, the simplicity of the Ole Miss offense makes him something of a question mark at the professional level, as he rarely had to read a defense and make difficult throws. Spending a season behind Carr could be the best thing for him, as he can adjust to the NFL game and learn how to read a defense from the sidelines before taking over in 2026.
