More Details Emerge From Wednesday’s Texans-Saints Trade

Houston Texans players, including Bradley Roby look on against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers

For the past few months, the New Orleans Saints have expressed their need for another cornerback. On Wednesday, the front office upgraded its secondary by acquiring Bradley Roby in a trade with the Houston Texans.

The official terms of this trade haven’t been revealed yet, but ESPN insider Field Yates did share some interesting information about this deal.

Yates is reporting that Houston converted $7.6 million of Roby’s base salary into a signing bonus. This means his base salary for the 2021 season is roughly $1.8 million, which allows him to fit into New Orleans’ cap space.

Since the Texans are eating a huge chunk of Roby’s salary to make this trade work, they’ll most likely receive better draft compensation from the Saints.

According to NFL insider Aaron Wilson, the Texans are expected to receive more than one draft pick in exchange for Roby.

In order to facilitate a trade to the Saints, the Texans converted ~$7.6M of CB Bradley Roby’s base salary into a signing bonus, per source.

When Roby officially gets traded to New Orleans, his base salary for 2021 is now $1,862,645, which fits into the Saints’ cap space.

Last season, Roby had 37 total tackles, seven passes defended and an interception for the Texans.

Roby won’t be able to play in the Saints’ season opener because he’s still serving his suspension from last year. He was suspended by the NFL for violating its performance-enhancing drug policy.

The Saints should have Roby in their lineup for their Week 2 showdown with the Panthers. His role on the team is unclear at this time, but he should have an opportunity to start opposite of Marshon Lattimore.
