Definitely a welcomed changed after last year
During training camp last year, the starting quarterback spot was never up for question, as Derek Carr was going to be the main guy. The focus of many was actually on the backup battle between Jake Haener and Spencer Rattler. Backup competition is not usually something that garners much attention. Still, due to Carr’s potential injuries and lackluster play on the field, there was a real chance that backup would get starting time during the season. This is precisely what happened, but Dennis Allen and the Saints made one massive mistake: they did not commit to either Rattler or Haener until they had to. It took until Allen had to name one of them as the team’s starter to finally commit. Comparing it to the Saints’ current QB competition, things are a bit different.
Going into training camp, the Saints have not named a starting quarterback for the 2025 season. That is completely fine and understandable, primarily due to how close the battle already is, but they cannot make the same mistakes as the last regime. Instead of waiting until the last moment, like Dennis Allen did, the New Orleans Saints must commit to one of these quarterbacks earlier, and it seems like new head coach Kellen Moore believes this same thing.
Kellen Moore said there is benefit to making the QB decision early, but they won’t force it and they won’t hurry it. Decision will come when it comes.

When looking at what Moore said, it still means that the Saints will not rush the process, but it also indicates that the team will not waste time if they believe one of the quarterbacks is the starter. This combination should create a scenario where New Orleans will name a starting quarterback a bit earlier than some may have expected. As Kellen Moore said, there are benefits to this decision. Whoever is named QB1 will have time to prepare with the starters, and the coaches can ensure the quarterback is ready for the start of the season. That quarterback will also get some practices in the offseason as the named starter, which can help with confidence and development.
Time will tell who wins the battle for the starting spot, but currently, it appears head coach Kellen Moore is handling this process the correct way.
