Allen said of Carr, “My experience with him was outstanding. I mean, what a great individual. I was there when we drafted him in Oakland, had a chance to coach him again as he matured there in New Orleans. I love Derek Carr. I haven’t spoken to him. I just saw that right before we walked onto the practice field today, but he did a lot of good things, and he was always somebody that was pleasant to be around in the building.”
Allen and Carr’s relationship first dates back to 2014, when Carr was drafted by the then Oakland Raiders in the 2nd round of the NFL Draft. In 2023, they reunited in New Orleans when Allen became the Saints head coach and Carr was signed to a 4-year deal.
Last season, Carr suffered an oblique injury in Week 5 and in Week 14, he sustained a fractured hand and a concussion as well as the shoulder injury which has now ultimately led to his decision to retire. Following a 7-game losing streak, Allen was let go by the Saints on November 4, 2024. On January 27, 2025, it was announced that Allen would the Bears new defensive coordinator.
