Former Panthers Second Rounder Could Be On Roster Bubble

August 23, 2025 by Last Word On Pro Football

Despite signing a three-year deal with the Buffalo Bills, the wide receiver, Curtis Samuel, might be on the roster bubble right before the 2025 regular season starts. According to a report, the Bills have plenty of offensive weapons to work with, and given that there is a ton of talent, there might not be enough room for Samuel. After signing Joshua Palmer and Elijah Moore, they’re pretty much on lock to make the 53-man roster, while Khalil Shakir will return soon from his injury, and Keon Coleman is their top contributor. Originally selected in the 2017 NFL Draft, the former Ohio State product is looking to make a name for himself, finally, on this roster after a rough 2024 campaign, recording just 31 receptions for 253 receiving yards and one touchdown.

With the team having Laviska Shenault, that separates him from other wideouts as a return specialist, then it means Samuel is in the danger zone. The biggest implication of a release is the dead money that would come with it, so the team could dangle him on the trade block before making the difficult decision of just cutting him. After the Skyy Moore trade between the Chiefs and 49ers, it’s still possible that other teams are looking for a low-stakes at minimum to salvage their receiver core. Samuel isn’t the greatest weapon by any means, but he could be an excelling depth chart piece for these three teams.

Best Next Possible Teams

Los Angeles Chargers

Despite losing Mike Williams to retirement, the Los Angeles Chargers quickly made up for it and brought back Keenan Allen. While that could help in the short term this season, the team should invest in another low-stakes, budget-friendly receiver. Samuel isn’t going to put up at least 1,000 receiving yards, but it gives quarterback Justin Herbert two veteran targets as they’re developing Ladd McConkey, Tre Harris and KeAndre Lambert-Smith. Quentin Johnston is recovering from his concussion, but it might be too late for him to return.

Samuel isn’t the final solution to the Chargers’ receiver woes, but it does add some stability in the aerial attack in slant routes, where Herbert has been able to thrive other than launching it to his tight ends.

New Orleans Saints

Meanwhile, the New Orleans Saints have probably one of the best young groups of receivers in the making after trading for DeVaughn Vele. He has a lot of potential to turn into a reliable WR3 behind Rashid Shaheed and Chris Olave. While they signed Brandin Cooks, they could use someone like Samuel to solidify the veteran experience the Saints need in the background to help mold quarterback Spencer Rattler.

Dallas Cowboys

The Dallas Cowboys might be in the market for more wide receivers since they lost Jonathan Mingo and will miss him for a couple of weeks this upcoming season. CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens won’t get fewer snaps, but it’s smarter for the Cowboys to take advantage of having more than three targets and a tight end to depend on. Again, Samuel won’t get all of the looks in the world, but it gives the Cowboys’ aerial attack some additional relief for Dak Prescott to stretch the field.
