Drew Brees: Taysom Hill Should Play 10-15 Snaps At QB Per Game

April 23, 2022 by The Spun Leave a Comment

New Orleans Saints quarterbacks Taysom Hill and Drew Brees discuss a play during playoff game vs. the Vikings.

Following his round in the pro-am tournament at the Zurich Classic at TPC Louisiana on Wednesday, Saints legend Drew Brees spoke with the media.

During his latest media session, Brees was asked about the Saints’ current quarterback situation. As of now, their depth chart consists of Jameis Winston, Andy Dalton and Ian Book.

The Saints announced earlier this year that Taysom Hill would move over to tight end for the 2022 season. Brees, however, believes Hill should still receive at least 10-15 snaps at quarterback per game.

“You re-sign Jameis [Winston], coming off the knee injury. To me, there’s no doubt that he’s going to come back stronger than ever and have some more wisdom, experience and maturity under his belt. Andy Dalton played a lot of football, started a lot of games, won a lot of games, taking teams to the playoffs,” Brees told Jeff Duncan of NOLA.com. “With those two guys, plus the role that Taysom plays, which I still am a believe that Taysom should be playing 10-15 snaps at quarterback a game at a minimum, just with the threat he is. I know he’s so valuable in so many other ways. I think they’re pretty set at quarterback, if you ask me.”

It’s possible the Saints continue to use Hill as a quarterback in short-yardage situations, but 15 snaps per game seems a bit rich at the moment.

Hill still has value as an offensive weapon, but he’s at his best when the Saints move him all over the field. Placing him under center for 15 snaps each game might not be the best formula for success.

Saints offensive coordinator Pete Carmichael will have plenty of important decisions to make now that Sean Payton is no longer overlooking that side of the football.
