The Saints haven’t had much success at quarterback since losing Drew Brees to retirement. With that said, the front office has shown interest in Derek Carr of the Raiders.
Earlier this week, the Saints brought Carr in for a visit. He met with head coach Dennis Allen and offensive coordinator Pete Carmichael.
During an interview with The Spun, Brees was asked about his former team’s interest in Carr.
Brees believes Carr would be a good fit for the Saints, and vice versa.
“I think highly of Derek Carr. I’ve always been impressed with the system he ran and his command of the system,” Brees told The Spun. “Unfortunately, he had a couple of big games against us. He’s been a part of a tough situation with the Raiders over the last few years. It felt like just about every bad thing that could happen would happen to those guys. He caught the brunt of that – unfairly so, in my opinion. Look, I think it’d be a great thing for Derek Carr and a great thing for the Saints. We’ll see how it plays out, but this is that time of the year where you see that [quarterback] shuffle happening.”
Carr’s base salary for the 2023 season becomes fully guaranteed on Feb. 15, which means the Raiders are running out of time to orchestrate a trade.
If the Raiders can’t work out a trade, they’ll have to consider releasing Carr. That would most likely spark a bidding war.
