Back in December, the Purdue Boilermakers hired Drew Brees as an interim assistant coach for the Citrus Bowl. This led to a ton of speculation about his future as a coach.
During an interview with The Spun, Brees was asked about potentially coaching on a full-time basis. It doesn’t sound like that’ll happen anytime soon.
“I’ve had opportunities, and honestly, I feel like the time commitment that I want to devote my time to is my family and be as much a part of their life as I can,” Brees told The Spun. “I don’t want to miss weekends with them. Also, when I’m not affiliated with one team, I have the chance to work with a lot of people. I have a lot of NFL guys reach out to me and I have the chance to speak with them. I like being in this situation where I can help as many people as possible.”
Brees certainly has the skillset to help out a team’s staff on offense, but we can’t blame him for wanting to spend quality time with his family instead.
Brees spent his first year in retirement as a broadcaster for NBC Sports. It was announced prior to the 2022 season that he would not return.
The future Hall of Famer told The Spun there will be broadcasting opportunities “available down the road” if he chooses to pursue them.
For now, Brees is enjoying his time away from the gridiron.
