Chiefs, Dolphins Could Connect On Blockbuster Trade

September 20, 2025 by Last Word On Pro Football

The Miami Dolphins will enter next week at 0-3 and are probably on one of the worst starts for the organization, so they could trade star running back Devon Achane. According to one report, a source believes the Chiefs may trade for Achane at some point to upgrade the backfield room. However, Achane is likely to get trade interest from several teams since he’s still under a rookie deal, and getting him on a new roster wouldn’t be the worst idea. The Dolphins are not in shape to be a contender, so it’s better to get something out of him while he has trade value.

Originally selected in the third round of the 2023 NFL Draft, the former Texas A&M product became the main contributor to this running game, recording the highest single-season yards per carry in the league. It’s hard to imagine he leaves the Dolphins early in his career, but with the emergence of Ollie Gordon, there might not be a path for Miami to keep Achane. This doesn’t mean there is anything wrong with Achane, but he’d be a better fit where a team like the Chiefs could bring out the best in his abilities. It’s easy to understand why the Chiefs would target Achane, as they still have Isiah Pacheco as a viable downhill runner; they need some depth to help veteran Kareem Hunt in the backfield.

Other Potential Suitors

New Orleans Saints

The New Orleans Saints must improve their running game to help star Alvin Kamara feel comfortable for the foreseeable future. While they did sign Clyde Edwards-Helaire and Cam Akers to boost the depth chart, it didn’t pan out as head coach Kellen Moore was hoping. They stuck with an unproven Kendre Miller, but he hasn’t been doing much to prove that he can eventually take over starting duties once Kamara retires.

The Saints might not have to worry about that anytime soon, but when you’re rebuilding a new offense after getting DeVaughn Vele and Trey Palmer, you should have the same energy for the backfield unit. Achane won’t take snaps away from Kamara, but these two speedsters could be what quarterback Spencer Rattler needs to turn into a reliable signal-caller and avoid throwing the easy interceptions.

Los Angeles Chargers

Meanwhile, the Los Angeles Chargers’ run game hasn’t been the greatest, but 2025 draft pick Omarion Hampton is most likely going through growing pains. It’s still early in the season, and anything can happen. However, they signed Najee Harris under a one-year contract, and he may leave the team after the 2025 campaign once Hampton establishes his place as the No. 1 running back for the roster. They will need backup, and Jim Harbaugh’s running philosophy could benefit from the presence of Achane.

Dallas Cowboys

This would be a no-brainer trade for the Dallas Cowboys. Jerry Jones is open for business, and while the run game has shown some life with Javonte Williams, they could use some immediate help. Miles Sanders still looks like his old self, and 2025 draft pick Jaydon Blue has yet to start. This should leave room for Achane to step in and make an impact on the field.
