Chiefs, Chargers Could Revive Raiders Cut Free Agent

April 8, 2025 by Last Word On Pro Football

raiders cut jack jones

The Las Vegas Raiders will cut free agent cornerback Jack Jones after failing to trade him this offseason. According to the breaking news, instead of looking for a trade, the Raiders will release the cornerback, who joins other free agents available on the market. Originally selected in the fourth round of the 2022 NFL Draft, the former Arizona State product began his career with the New England Patriots, establishing himself as a versatile secondary piece, but they later released him following an arrest. Jones got a new opportunity under former head coach Antonio Pierce, but he only played two seasons with them.

The cornerback did have an impressive output, accumulating five interceptions, 20 passes defensed and 94 total tackles. It wasn’t enough for the Raiders to keep him since the regime is changing under Pete Carroll, and Jones is no longer in the team’s plans moving forward. Jones won’t be a hot free agent this offseason, but he has a lot of upside for a team that needs a cornerback for depth. He won’t sign before the NFL Draft, but the cornerback might be better off signing with a contender that could revive his career.

Jones isn’t the worst on the market, and he should sign before the 2025 season with these two teams.

More Help for Trent McDuffie

Even though the Kansas City Chiefs had one of the best defenses last season, the team will be looking to upgrade its secondary unit. Trent McDuffie had a phenomenal 2024 campaign, filling in the shoes of L’Jarius Sneed, who left for the Tennesse Titans. However, the unit could use some work, as it’s never a bad time for the Chiefs to continue upgrading the secondary department. This is why the team signed Kristian Fulton to give some stability, but he has a strong history of injuries.

He was able to stay healthy for the majority of the season for the Los Angeles Chargers, but it doesn’t mean it won’t creep up on them. Jack Jones doesn’t need to start, but he would be a capable upgrade over Nazeeh Johnson to share the snaps on defense in some moments. Jaylen Watson could be on the trade block this offseason, so the Chiefs should play it safe and sign Jones.

Harbaugh’s Defense

As for the Chargers, the defense will look dramatically different for them this season. Donte Jackson is replacing Fulton’s spot, while they’re not planning to bring Asante Samuel back on the roster. Rookie Cam Hart is far from being a full-time starter, so they should be in the market for a new cornerback. Jones needs a reset, and he could do that with the Chargers as a starter in Los Angeles.

Other Potential Fits

Meanwhile, the Ravens need a cornerback, too. After trading for Tre’Davious White, they know they need some solid depth behind Nate Wiggins and veteran Marlon Humphrey. Jones won’t start, but since the Ravens are in the winning column, he could be successful in this unit.

In Carolina, they also need some solid depth behind Jaycee Horn and Mike Jackson after giving them an extension. However, they still had one of the worst defenses last season. Jones won’t change this average group around, but he could give some potential upside.
