Taysom Hill was the best Saints player on the field the day of their final game of the season, a wild card home loss to the Minnesota Vikings.
Saints fans have grown to love Hill for the many things he brings to the teams offense, but to think long term that he’s going to be in that position forever is a pipe dream.
Make no mistake, Hill has his eyes on one thing – playing quarterback and being a franchise quarterback for some team in the near future.
“I definitely view myself as a franchise quarterback,” Hill said to the Associated Press’ Rob Maaddi.
“I think as you look at the other questions: Is it New Orleans? Is it somewhere else? As you go into free agency, this is the time that you start to find out how people view you.
“We haven’t gotten into free agency long enough to really know how these guys view me and we’ll just handle it as it comes.”
Hill is a restricted free agent this spring, meaning that any offer a team makes him can be matched by the Saints, but if a team thinks he’s ready to be a franchise quarterback, the price tag that a team will give him almost for sure will be way out of the Saints range.
This free agency period for quarterbacks is going to be the most historical in NFL history, with the likes of possibly Tom Brady, Philip Rivers and even Dak Prescott entering free agency without a contract.
Hill says he would love to be the Saints franchise QB of the future, but that comes down to how much longer Drew Brees wants to keep playing.
“I have loved every second of my time (in New Orleans). So do I want to leave? The fact of the matter is no, I don’t,” Hill said.
“But as you look at free agency, you have to find the right opportunity for you. You have to find the situation to take care of your family. I want to play quarterback in this league, and if New Orleans don’t view me that way, well then I have to leave. That’s really where we’re at.”
