Breaking: Saints Urged to Sign Chiefs Free Agent

May 28, 2025 by Last Word On Pro Football

Former second-overall pick Carson Wentz is still a free agent, and one writer believes he could land with the New Orleans Saints. Selected to be the Eagles franchise quarterback, the North Dakota State product originally played up to his high draft capital. Following a promising rookie season, Wentz exploded with a dominant 2017, completing 60.2% of his passes for 3,296 yards, 33 touchdowns, and seven interceptions in 13 games before tearing his ACL. He remained Philadelphia’s starter for the next three seasons but never recaptured that magic and crashed and burned through a disastrous 2020.

Since then, the quarterback has bounced around the league as either a short-term starter or backup. Wentz spent 2024 backing up Patrick Mahomes in Kansas City, appearing in three games while completing 12 of his 19 attempts for 118 yards. With most free agents signed, Wentz is probably the best quarterback remaining on the open market, outside of Aaron Rodgers. While he’s not a franchise quarterback, Bleacher Report‘s Moe Moton believes the Saints should sign him to add some experience to their young, untested quarterback room.

Bleacher Report: Saints Should Sign Carson Wentz

Following Derek Carr’s surprising retirement, the New Orleans Saints have have rookie second-round pick Tyler Shough battling inexperienced veterans Spencer Rattler and Jake Haener for the starting job. Shough has yet to play an NFL snap, while Rattler and Haener went a combined 0-7 while filling in for Carr last year. Rattler showed some signs of life last year, but still finished with an underwhelming 57% completion percentage, 5.8 yards per attempt, four touchdowns, and five interceptions. Shough, meanwhile, has the raw tools to succeed in the NFL but has a bloated injury history and will be 26 by Week 1.

Carson Wentz will not become a franchise quarterback for the Saints, but the one-time MVP candidate could be a welcome addition to this room. While he’ll probably be a backup, someone with his starting experience could be a valuable mentor for whichever player wins the starting job.
