New Orleans Saints quarterback Derek Carr has shockingly announced his retirement. Carr, a former second-round pick and 11-year NFL veteran, spent the 2024 season with the New Orleans Saints but is best known for his time with the Las Vegas Raiders.

Derek Carr Announces Retirement

Carr’s retirement comes after an offseason of drama surrounding the high-priced quarterback. After injuries limited him to just 10 games last year, Carr risked missing the 2025 season with a shoulder injury that could have sidelined him for all of 2025. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reportedly that non-surgical options were not enough to fix his injury, so the quarterback decided to call it a career.

With Carr sidelined, second-round pick Tyler Shough becomes the presumed starter in New Orleans. Selected with the 40th-overall pick, the Louisville product will be 26 at the start of the season but has the physical tools to succeed in the NFL. 2024 fifth-round pick Spencer Rattler and third-string quarterback Jake Haener round out the quarterback room for Kellen Moore’s squad.

Prior to his retirement, Derek Carr spent two seasons with the New Orleans Saints. Originally joining the team in 2023, the organization believed Carr could be the missing piece to bring this team to the playoffs for the first time since Drew Brees called it a career. That didn’t happen, but the longtime Raider played adequately during his time on the field. Carr finished his Saints tenure by making 27 starts for the team with 6,023 passing yards, 40 touchdowns, and 13 interceptions.

Derek Carr originally entered the league as a second-round pick in the 2014 NFL Draft. Selected by the then-Oakland Raiders, the Fresno State product earned the Week 1 starting job and put up a respectable rookie season. He built on that impressive campaign to guide the Raiders to the playoffs in 2016, although a thumb injury sidelined him for the contest. He ultimately spent nine year with the Raiders before then-head coach Josh McDaniels released him.
