Breaking: Eagles Could Cut Former Second Round Pick – 4 Suitors Possible

July 15, 2025 by Last Word On Pro Football

Despite signing a one-year deal with the team this offseason, the Philadelphia Eagles could cut former second-rounder AJ Dillon before the 2025 regular season. According to a report, one source believes the Eagles could release Dillon and put him on the practice squad. However, there’s a possibility that Philadelphia could make Dillon available on the market this year since they have plenty of depth behind the main contributor, Saquon Barkley. No one is taking Barkley’s starting spot, but the Eagles want to start thinking about the future, especially after the Barkley retirement rumors that might come in the next 2-3 years at most.

This shouldn’t worry the Eagles by any means. He just signed a contract extension, and he isn’t going anywhere. However, Dillon is a player to watch this NFL training camp, as 2024 draft pick Will Shipley has been impressing at OTAs, so he might be the one to take over as the true backup for Barkley. Originally selected in the 2020 NFL Draft, the former Boston College product was brought to the Eagles this offseason, since they lost Kenneth Gainwell to the Steelers. Dillon was hoping to make a comeback in Philadelphia after coming off his season-ending injury in 2024, but due to the emergence of Shipley, it might not happen with the Eagles.

Potential Next Teams

New Orleans Saints

While Alvin Kamara could stick around for the 2025 regular season, there’s no guarantee he will be a Saint next year. Kamara is only getting older, and it wouldn’t be surprising if he requests a trade this season at the earliest, as the team doesn’t have a winning culture. This would leave Cam Akers and Kendre Miller to brace for what’s to come in the rebuild that Mickey Loomis refuses to do. If Dillon becomes available before the season starts this year, the Saints should sign him at least on a cheap two-year minimum to keep competition rolling in the background.

Dallas Cowboys

Meanwhile, the Dallas Cowboys have everything right in their offensive unit except the running back department. Despite drafting Jaydon Blue, no one should expect Miles Sanders and Javonte Williams to last more than one season on this roster. Blue is the likely starter in this scenario, and while the Cowboys are experimenting, they should roll the dice on Dillon to see what he could do as an RB3 at least.

Baltimore Ravens

However, just like the Saints, they must start thinking about the future of their backfield unit sooner rather than later. Derrick Henry signed a new deal, but he’s getting older, and that means his production might slow down. While Keaton Mitchell has unproven potential, the Ravens are better off getting a veteran option to boost the department, and Dillon could be available for cheap.

Los Angeles Chargers

Nobody wants to run the football more than head coach Jim Harbaugh. The Los Angeles Chargers took Omarion Hampton in the first round of this year’s draft after signing Najee Harris to begin free agency. It’s anyone’s starting duties up for grabs this campaign, and they should at least get Dillon to fill the hole as an RB3 to work his way back at least in a backup role.
