This past week Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Derek Carr was finally granted permission to speak with other teams about a potential trade and promptly took a visit to the New Orleans Saints. On Sunday, he made his decision.
According to NFL insider Ian Rapoport, Carr has informed the Raiders that he will not be accepting a trade to the Saints or any other team. As a result, the team has until this week to either release him or fully guarantee his salary for the 2023 season.
Rapoport noted that the Raiders are expected to release Carr instead. He will be a free agent when the new league year starts next month.
Once released, Carr will be the top free agent quarterback available. The Saints look to be the early favorites to sign him given that he has already visited them. But the New York Jets, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Carolina Panthers and Washington Commanders could be viable candidates for his services too.
Derek Carr and the Raiders both made it pretty clear even before the end of the season that the 2022 season would be his last with the team.
Carr’s tenure in Vegas will end as the all-time leading passer in team history. He was a four-time Pro Bowler but had only two winning seasons as a starter.
Now he’s set to be the most sought-after free agent quarterback of the 2023 offseason.
Where will Derek Carr go next?
