Breaking: Cowboys Could Trade Former Eagle Legend – Will Anyone Get Him?

July 14, 2025 by Last Word On Pro Football

Despite the Dallas Cowboys signing him this offseason, the team could trade former Carolina Panther Miles Sanders before the 2025 regular season. According to a report, one source believes the Cowboys will trade Sanders to allow 2025 draft pick Jaydon Blue to get more opportunities in the backfield. While that could be true that between Javonte Williams and Sanders, Blue won’t see a lot of potential touches, it doesn’t necessarily mean his time won’t be coming. The Cowboys are still dissecting which running back is capable of being the full-time starter for this squad ever since they let Tony Pollard test free agency last offseason.

Blue arguably has the best chances to win the starting duties, but the Cowboys won’t allow the idea of releasing Sanders so early before the preseason. It’s not ideal for a team that just signed the veteran months ago, but it doesn’t mean it won’t happen at all. Originally selected in the second round of the 2019 NFL Draft, the former Penn State product became a valuable runner for the Philadelphia Eagles before losing his footing during his last season with them. Sanders was hoping for more touches, and the Carolina Panthers brought him in to try to reignite his career, which hasn’t been happening like they were hoping.

Sanders might not be the greatest free agent if he becomes one again, but these four teams could take a chance on him for a backup role at least.

Possible Destinations

Kansas City Chiefs

Isiah Pacheco became one of the most promising long-term running backs for Kansas City to fighting for a roster spot next year. He’s on the hot seat, and with veteran Kareem Hunt, the Chiefs’ backfield unit is getting weaker slowly as time goes on. Despite signing Elijah Mitchell, the Chiefs could trade Sanders as the latest veteran to hold down backup duties, at least if Hunt departs in 2026.

Los Angeles Chargers

Jim Harbaugh wants to run the football, so why not add another running back to test the waters? Between 2025 draft pick Omarion Hampton and veteran Najee Harris, Sanders could find his role in this system in a situational role. He won’t carry most of the snaps, but could be a reliable force to come in in certain moments.

New Orleans Saints

Meanwhile, the New Orleans Saints have one of the weakest running back rooms, other than Alvin Kamara. Despite signing Cam Akers, they can’t lean on him or draft bust Kendre Miller to take over if Kamara truly requests a trade if the Saints endure another losing season. Sanders isn’t a starter in the league anymore, but it would give the team a fighting chance in the backfield department.

Chicago Bears

The Chicago Bears missed out on 2025 draft pick Ashton Jeanty in the first round, but it doesn’t mean it’s quite over for the team to salvage the unit. D’Andre Swift could be on the trade block before the 2025 campaign starts, and if that happens, they might be in the market for at least a rotational running back. Sanders won’t put up over 1,000 rushing yards, but could be some kind of support for second-year Caleb Williams.
