Despite getting some first-team reps last season as a rookie, the Kansas City Chiefs could cut fullback Carson Steele before the 2025 regular season. Gary Davenport of Bleacher Report believes the Chiefs might release Steele and sign him to the practice squad. Since there is no realistic way for the team to keep five running backs on the roster, a release makes sense after signing Elijah Mitchell and drafting Brashard Smith as backups for veteran Kareem Hunt and Isiah Pacheco. Even though the source says the Chiefs could keep Steele on the practice squad, there’s a chance that someone might claim him off waivers if it happens.
Originally selected as an undrafted rookie, the former UCLA product got three starts last season due to Pacheco’s season-ending injury, sharing the snaps with Hunt. However, it was nothing special, so this is why they got Mitchell during free agency if they wind up losing Pacheco again, as he finds himself needing to step up to earn another contract after the 2025 regular season. Steele isn’t the most exciting runner for a squad, but he could have a lot of potential if he gets the right looks. The Chiefs will have to act quickly if they want to keep him for the rest of his rookie deal, or else these four teams might steal him away.

Breaking: Chiefs Could Cut Former 2024 Draft Pick Carson Steele Before Regular Season – 4 Potential Destinations
Best Fits
Dallas Cowboys
As the Dallas Cowboys have one of the worst running rooms, this signing would make sense to salvage the unit. Steele is a low-stakes, safe bet signing that could help 2025 draft pick Jaydon Blue adjust, given that he has Super Bowl experience. This isn’t going to bring the running back unit to full speed, but it gives the Cowboys four runners who have a chance to make or break the roster.
New Orleans Saints
Meanwhile, the New Orleans Saints have one of the most high-level runners in Alvin Kamara, but the depth behind him doesn’t look promising. No one should expect Clyde Edwards-Helaire, Cam Akers or Kendre Miller to make a ton of noise. Kamara is aging and can’t afford to run every ball that’s given to him, so it’s better to keep him as fresh as possible. Steele isn’t a typical speedster like Kamara, but he could fight for the third-down runs and convert for a possible first down.
Washington Commanders
However, the Washington Commanders RB1 Brian Robinson Jr. is shockingly rumored to be cut before the 2025 campaign. This wouldn’t make sense, as this would leave Austin Ekeler as the next man up for this unit. Given that they need some bolstering in the running back room, Steele could join the Commanders on a cheap contract to give some backup for Robinson and Ekeler. He wouldn’t make Jayden Daniels better, but it gives some type of short yardage plays that might benefit them to size down third down conversions.
Los Angeles Chargers
Nobody loves running the football more than head coach Jim Harbaugh. This means the Chargers should probably sign another running back who might become available. The team has two running backs like Omarion Hampton and Najee Harris, who can break tackles, so why not get a third? Steele isn’t special by any means, but it gives Harbaugh another old-school type player who could run over defenders.
