It’s shaping up to be an excellent weekend for running backs from the 2017 draft class. Just moments after Dalvin Cook signed an extension with the Vikings, the Saints struck a deal with Alvin Kamara.
Negotiations between Kamara and the Saints have been tricky. Last week, there were serious talks about whether or not New Orleans would just trade him instead of paying him top dollar.
Well, it’s pretty clear the Saints want Kamara on their roster for the foreseeable future. According to NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport, the Saints and Kamara have agreed to a five-year deal worth $75 million in new money.
Kamara gets a $15 million signing bonus as part of this extension, which is a nice gift heading into Week 1 of the regular season.

This extension means that Kamara will earn more money per season than every running back not named Ezekiel Elliott or Christian McCaffrey.
Kamara certainly deserves to be one of the highest-paid tailbacks in the game. When healthy, the Tennessee product is impossible to defend as a runner and receiver.
Now that both sides have agreed to a deal, Sean Payton won’t have to face questions about his tailback’s contract situation. It’s a massive weight taken off his shoulders before the team’s season opener.
We’ll see if Kamara can validate his new contract with a strong showing against the Buccaneers on Sunday.
