The NFL’s 2020 trade deadline is set for Nov. 3, giving the New Orleans Saints about a month to turn over every stone and look for ways to improve their roster. There may not be a clearer spot they can improve right now than defensive end, where 2018 first-round draft pick Marcus Davenport is still absent with elbow and toe injuries (having been downgraded from limited participation on Thursday’s injury report).
And New Orleans was desperate to add talent to the pass rush rotation over the summer. They were heavily involved in Jadeveon Clowney’s free agency, going so far as to attempt the NFL’s first sign-and-trade deal to make the finances work, but it was to no avail. They know this problem will only get worse the longer Davenport is out of action, and now the clock has started ticking on how much time is left to address it.
Now, the Saints probably aren’t going to shatter anyone’s worldview here. A trade for a blue-chip pass rusher like Bud Dupree, Ryan Kerrigan, or Whitney Mercilus is not realistic. But if you look around the league there are some situations where the Saints could haggle for help at the right price. Here are six names to consider:
