The NFL roster cuts deadline is one of the worst days on its calendar each year, spelling the end for many players’ careers. Sure, some of them will get new opportunities as free agents or waiver wire pickups, and most will hope to return to their team’s practice squad. But for too many players, turning in their playbooks in an exit interview with their coach is the last thing they’ll do in the NFL.
It’s no different for the New Orleans Saints, who must trim their roster down from 80 contracts to just 53 by 3 p.m. CT on Saturday, Sept. 5. Saints G.M. Mickey Loomis expressed anxiety about letting good players leave the building due to a lack of preseason game tape to evaluate, and that’s probably going to happen given how talented their depth chart has become.
Still, they’ve already gotten a head start on this uncomfortable process before that NFL-mandated deadline. Here’s the latest reports of which players will be released as the Saints put the finishing touches on their roster:
