Magic Set To Make Wagner Decision Amidst Jalen Suggs’ Struggles

With star forward Paolo Banchero sidelined, the Orlando Magic have been forced to reevaluate their lineup and scoring options. As Jalen Suggs struggles to step into a higher-scoring role, head coach Jamahl Mosley has looked toward Moritz Wagner to fill the gap for the Magic. This decision is already yielding results, and as the team evaluates options, Wagner’s role has quickly become crucial.

Moritz Wagner Steps Up as Second Scorer

The Magic recently turned to Moritz Wagner as their secondary scoring option behind Franz Wagner, a move that has been successful. Wagner, who re-signed with the Magic this offseason on a favorable two-year, $22 million deal, has proven to be a reliable scorer. He scored 17 and 16 points in consecutive blowout wins against the New Orleans Pelicans and the Washington Wizards, rewarding Mosley’s confidence.

Wagner’s surge in scoring has helped the Magic end a five-game losing streak, giving them two straight wins in Banchero’s absence. His contributions are critical, not only because of his scoring ability but also because his improved performance may shift his standing within the franchise.

Suggs Struggles Offensively, Despite Defensive Brilliance

Suggs, who recently signed a lucrative five-year, $150.5 million rookie scale extension, has been under pressure to elevate his offensive output. He excels defensively; the NBA regards him as one of the top guards in on-ball pressure and defensive activity. However, his offense has yet to catch up.

Suggs is currently averaging 14.3 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 4.3 assists per game on shooting splits of 42.5% from the field, 19.4% from three, and 88.9% from the free-throw line over the last six games. His true shooting percentage of 51% highlights his offensive inconsistency. These numbers, slightly inflated by a standout 28-point performance against the Cleveland Cavaliers, reflect his struggles to maintain a consistent scoring presence during Banchero’s absence. Despite an increased shot volume, Suggs has not delivered the offensive production the Magic need.

A Shift Toward Moritz Wagner as the Primary Scoring Solution

Seeing Suggs struggle, the Magic have adjusted their strategy. In the last two games, Moritz and his brother Franz have led the team in field goal attempts, indicating a conscious shift in the offensive focus. With Banchero expected to be out until at least December 8, this decision to lean on Wagner is not taken lightly. Orlando’s ability to maintain their momentum without their star forward may ultimately hinge on this new approach.

Wagner’s scoring presence has injected stability and efficiency into the Magic’s offense, which was initially challenged by Banchero’s absence. This shift toward Wagner could be the key to keeping the team competitive in the coming weeks and may have lasting implications for Orlando’s lineup and strategy.

Potential Trade Rumors Loom Amidst Season-Defining Decisions

If Wagner continues to perform well in this role, the Magic might face some critical roster decisions. With several players on team-friendly contracts, including Wagner himself, the team has flexibility for potential trades if scoring issues persist. Rumors of a trade for a third or fourth star could surface if Orlando feels they need an additional scorer to maintain playoff aspirations.

Previously, Wagner’s contract and production made him a potential trade asset. However, if he continues to play at this level, he could either secure a long-term ‘untouchable’ role with the team or become a more valuable asset in a possible trade. For now, Orlando’s immediate focus will be on optimizing Wagner’s role and balancing the roster’s scoring distribution.

Moritz Wagner’s Success Could Define the Magic’s Season

The decision to turn to Moritz Wagner as a scoring solution is more than a short-term fix—it’s a choice that could shape the Magic’s season. With Banchero out and Suggs struggling offensively, Wagner’s ability to step up will play a key role in Orlando’s success. If he continues to shine, it may alter the team’s plans for future trades and roster adjustments. The Magic’s upcoming games will reveal whether Wagner can continue as the team’s secondary scorer or if the team will need to explore other options.
