Umpires Blow Major, Confusing Call In SEC Tournament Game

June 27, 2024 by The Spun

This past week saw one of the most baffling blown calls by a Major League Baseball umpire ever during a White Sox-Orioles game. But the umpire in today’s SEC Tournament game between LSU and South Carolina apparently told those guys to hold his beer.

During the game, a South Carolina baserunner tried to steal home but got caught and called out. However, after a discussion by the umpires, they ruled that the catcher interfered by stepping outside of the catcher’s box and awarded the runner the home plate.

To add insult to injury, LSU head coach Jay Johnson was ejected for objecting. Check it out, via Trey Wallace on X:

Fans were absolutely baffled by the situation, which gave South Carolina an 11-10 lead over LSU in the top of the 10th inning. Had LSU not come back with a walk off run, LSU fans likely would have been calling for heads to roll.

“Don’t let LSU hitting a walkoff home run to get the umpires off the hook for a horrendous call made from their memory by misapplying the rules distract you from the fact South Carolina blew an 8 run lead,” one user wrote after the game.

“The worst call by umpires in baseball history. And I’m a Braves fan with the infield fly,” wrote another.

“That got multiple calls wrong on that play,” a third pointed out.

This is going to be a contentious topic in the very near future. That’s for sure.
