With the second overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, the Washington Commanders can take literally any player available other than Caleb Williams. Needing a quarterback, they seem very likely to go with reigning Heisman Trophy winner Jayden Daniels.
But according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Daniels’ agent didn’t appreciate how the Commanders approached Daniels in their pre-draft meeting. Appearing on Get Up, Schefter said that Daniels’ agent was “not pleased” with the team’s decision to only include Daniels as part of a larger quarterback contingent, rather than meeting with him alone.
“It didn’t seem to go over too well with the agent for Jayden Daniels, Ron Butler, who sounded off on social media last night that he didn’t seem particularly pleased with the process,” Schefter said, via CBS Sports. “I think Jayden Daniels thought it would be a visit with just him meeting with the Commanders. Many people think that Jayden Daniels will wind up being the No. 2 overall pick. But the Commanders essentially opened up the process.”
Commanders general manager Adam Peters – who will ultimately have the final say on who the team takes – defended the position, telling ESPN’s John Keim that all of the players they brought in also had “a lot of time individually with coaches” and the staff.
“What’s cool is we got to see them all together in a group setting,” Peters said, via ESPN. “They all got a lot of time individually with coaches and with us. They were staggered coming in, too. It was a great blend of that and working everyone together in a fun environment.”
Maybe Daniels’ agent is making a mountain out of a molehill, or maybe he’s trying to send some sort of message about where he’d like to go.
Who knows?
