For the second time in three seasons, the Fightin’ Tigers of LSU will be hosting a Super Regional at Alex Box Stadium.
After a wild weekend at the Box that included a winner take all matchup, the party will continue as the LSU Tigers will welcome the West Virginia Mountaineers to Baton Rouge for a Super Regional matchup beginning on Saturday.
The Tigers got here because of that winner take all game against Little Rock that saw LSU overcome a early 5-1 behind the arm of Casan Evans and the bat of Ethan Frey. Now, Jay Johnson’s squad will hope to ride that wave of momentum to their second College World Series appearance under the national champion head coach.
“I told the players that tonight was one of the best wins of my coaching career because of what they had to do to earn it,” Johnson said postgame. “We won tonight because of character.”
West Virginia is no slouch, sweeping their way through the Clemson Regional including a pair of wins over SEC foe Kentucky and a Saturday win over Clemson.
The win for LSU means just as much to the SEC, who had a really tough weekend. Vanderbilt and Texas, the top two seeds of the tournament, were both bounced from their own Regionals as well as Ole Miss, who was the 10 seed. This weekend also saw Florida, Kentucky, and Georgia lose. Auburn, LSU, Tennessee, and Arkansas are the only SEC teams remaining out of the 16 left.
First pitch from Alex Box is set for 1:00 p.m. Saturday, 5:00 p.m on Sunday, and TBD if necessary for Monday.
