LSU Demolishes Langston 112-48, After a 69 Point Second Half

The LSU Lady Tigers demolished the Langston Lady Lions in a 112-48 exhibition match.

While the game does not count in the record books, it was the first game in purple and gold for coach Kim Mulkey.

The Tigers started senior guards Jailin Cherry and Khayla Pointer in the backcourt while playing seniors forward Awa Trasi and center Faustine Aifuwa along with newcomer sophomore center Hannah Gusters in the frontcourt.

The lineup gave LSU a height advantage that Langston was not able to overcome. The Tigers out-rebounded the Lions 68-29, with 38 of LSU’s rebounds coming on the offensive glass.

Along with the starting frontcourt trio, graduate transfer forward Autumn Newby shined in the paint as those four players gave LSU 40 points and 36 rebounds.

Pointer and Cherry controlled the backcourt with a combined 39 points, 14 rebounds, 12 steals, and 10 assists. Freshman guard Timia Ware came off the bench with an impressive 15 points and 70% field goal percentage subbing in for Pointer late in the game.

The duo of Gusters and Aifuwa shut down Langston senior forward Asheika Alexander who worked out with the WNBA’s Minnesota Lynx in the offseason before coming back to Langston this season. Alexander scored just one point in the game.

While LSU dominated most of the game, there were some down spots. The Tigers shot just 37.5% from the field and turned over the ball 16 times in the first half.

Mulkey made some adjustments at half time and in the second LSU cut turnovers in half and shot 50% from the field, even after resting most of the starters in the fourth quarter. The halftime adjustments allowed the Tigers to score 69 points.

The 69 points by LSU in the second half would have been the fourth highest total score in the previous season.

The win marked the first time the Tigers have scored in triple figures since 2010. For LSU fans, who have longed for a faster pace, higher scoring offense, this game should show that the offense is on the way.

The Tigers will host another free exhibition against the Loyola Wolfpack on November, 4^th and will open the season with the annual field trip game against the Nicholls State Colonels on November 9^th.
