How To Football: Week 1 (Pt. 1)

How to watch the Thursday and Friday kickoff games to the college football season.

Primetime Shift

  • North Dakota State-Colorado: I think we all know what’s up here and what’s on the table. Whatever the outcome may be, at least we know that The Discourse will be healthy and well-measured.
  • North Carolina-Minnesota: While the train wreck on ESPN is going to be begging for your attention and reactionary tweets, don’t sleep on this game. This may be the best game of the shift and is loaded with narratives. Can PJ Fleck navigate off the slightly warm seat? What does a post-Drake Maye UNC look like? Lot of unknowns here on both sides.
  • Coastal Carolina-Jacksonville State: Another low-key game, SP+ is calling this a true toss-up. Can the Gamecocks come into FBS and immediately salvage a win?
  • Sacramento State-San Jose State: [insert eye emojis here]

Friday Night, Light Shift

  • FAU-Michigan State: I don’t necessarily think this will be a good game, but it’ll be interesting to see where Tom Herman (yes, that Tom Herman) and Jonathan Smith have their respective programs as both are in interesting spots where they have upward mobility, especially now that FAU has that Pitbull money.
  • Lehigh-Army: Look it’s not a very busy Friday night, let’s get the troop respecting out of the way now.
  • Temple-Oklahoma: Actually don’t watch this, this is going to be NSFL.
  • Western Michigan-Wisconsin: It’s football.
  • TCU-Stanford: The Horned Frogs probably have an edge over the Cardinal, but don’t sleep on Troy Taylor. I think that was a savvy hire by Stanford. His first year was tough, but I think they’ll be more competitive than 3-9 in year two.
