A big win as recruiting season heats up
We haven’t been able to do one of these in a while, but the LSU football team got themselves a pretty impressive commitment Wednesday evening.
Five-star edge Trenton Henderson out of Pensacola announced on 247 Sports that he is committing to LSU and chose the Tigers over Texas and Florida among others.
Depending on what recruiting service you subscribe to, Henderson is either a five-star or a high four-star prospect. He is the No. 28 overall player per 247’s rankings, but No. 82 overall in its industry composite rankings; On3 sports has him as the No. 59 overall player per their rankings.
Still, no matter how you slice it LSU went into Florida and snatched a consensus top-100 prospect away from the Gators and fended off the Longhorns for his pledge. As a junior, Henderson had 50 tackles, 18 tackles for loss, 10 sacks, 20 hurries, and six pass breakups. He also plays basketball for Pensacola Catholic so he’s, obviously, a really good athlete. 247’s director Andrew Ivins compares him to former Georgia edge Azeez Ojulari.
Sprouting linebacker that can get after the quarterback as he comes screaming around the corner. Size has not been third-party verified, but is believed to be over 6-foot-4 and tipping the scales right around 225 pounds. Took a major step forward between sophomore and junior seasons – evoking much more confidence and physicality. Future could very well be in an on-ball role as a two-point edge rusher in an 3-4 look, but is rather comfortable dropping into space and has the chase speed to make stops outside the hashes, which suggests that he could also trigger from an off-ball perch. Ability to transition from speed to power is extremely encouraging at this stage. Same with the play recognition. Overall, should be viewed as a potential multi-year impact defender at the Power Four level given how he bends and moves at his size.
As it stands right now, LSU’s 2026 recruiting class has 12 commitments with six ranked in the top-100. LSU has the No. 5 class in the country behind USC, Georgia, Notre Dame and Texas A&M, though it should be noted LSU by far and away has the fewest commits. USC has 30 commitments, Georgia has 26, while Notre Dame and A&M each have 22. It’s all about the quality of the player, not quantity, and LSU’s class is only going to fill out even more between now and the Early Signing Day.
