After a stunning loss to UCLA in Week 1, LSU head coach Ed Orgeron gets a significantly easier opponent in Week 2 in the FCS’ McNeese State. But it may not be easy on a personal level as the Cowboys head to Baton Rouge with Orgeron’s son Cody as their quarterback.
Speaking to the media on Wednesday, Orgeron spoke out about facing his own son on the football field this weekend. He acknowledged that it will be “different” but was determined to put that aside and “put the Tigers first.”
“Obviously, it’s different, but I’ve got to put that aside,” Coach O said, via Saturday Down South. “I’ve got to put the Tigers first. He’s got to put McNeese first. We’ll compete like we always do.”
But Coach O isn’t the only member of his family looking forward to the meeting. In a recent interview, Cody Orgeron said it’s been his dream to play at Tiger Stadium, but he won’t begrudge his father for making that dream hard to enjoy.

Cody Orgeron has been McNeese State’s starter since 2019, and ranks in the top 10 in school history in all major passing categories. He contributed three touchdowns in the Cowboys’ 42-36 loss to West Florida this past week.
Coach O himself had high praise for how his son performed in the losing effort:
“I was very impressed with his release, with the play-calling. He made plays with his feet. His receivers did a good job.… He’s feeling confident right now,” Orgeron said.
LSU has never lost to an FCS team. Whether it’s Ed Orgeron’s son or not under center for McNeese State, that probably won’t change this weekend.
