Brian Kelly shocked the college football world on Monday evening when he left Notre Dame for LSU.
He seemed to be perfectly comfortable as the head man for the school, especially after another successful 11-1 season.
That said, when the best conference comes calling, it’s very hard to say no and Kelly proved that point right.
Colin Cowherd of “The Herd” believes he knows why Kelly left the Fighting Irish and said as much during his show on Tuesday.
“Brian Kelly is 60. He has rebuilt 3 programs brilliantly,” Cowherd said. “Notre Dame is in the best shape since Lou Holtz was there. But every time he plays Alabama or Georgia or Clemson, he’s got by far the second-best roster. Cause there’s that academic thing and that cold-weather thing and that rural thing. It’s hard to coach at Notre Dame, Brian Kelly told me a decade ago in Texas. He said, ‘You can’t coach here 20 years.’
He then touched on how he thinks Kelly potentially wants more of a challenge.
“He wants to challenge himself, He wants to be able to go toe-to-toe with the big dogs.”

Kelly will get quite the challenge going up against the likes of Alabama, Texas A&M, and Auburn each year in LSU’s division. He’ll also have to go up against the likes of Georgia and Florida at times in cross-division matchups or the SEC title game.
It remains to be seen if he can lead the Tigers to a National Championship as Ed Orgeron did.
