Brian Kelly has big shoes to fill in taking over as head coach at LSU (three pairs given the accomplishments of his predecessors). Coach O has come out and said what Kelly will need to do to ingratiate himself in Baton Rouge.
Appearing on 1010XL on Wednesday, former LSU head coach Ed Orgeron acknowledged that winning a national title may not be a fair expectation for Kelly but it is the reality. He said that with the players they recruit and the support network they have, he should be able to win a title within three years.
“I don’t know that it’s fair, but (national title) is the expectation. Great players, great support. You should be able to win a national championship in 3 years,” Coach O said.
Given that each of the last three LSU head coaches have won a national title, it’s obvious that Kelly has to achieve the same. But three years might not be the right timetable for doing so.

Coach O himself didn’t win a national title with LSU until 2019 – his fourth year at LSU.
It took Les Miles, Coach O’s predecessor, exactly three years to win one.
And as for Nick Saban – who will undoubtedly be Brian Kelly’s biggest obstacle now that they’re SEC West rivals – it took him four years to win his first national title with the Tigers.
But for the amount of money that LSU is paying Brian Kelly right now, he won’t have long to justify the investment.
Can Brian Kelly do what Coach O is suggesting and win a national title within three years?
