LSU football took a big hit to its 2022 recruiting class on Friday following the decommitment of a five-star defensive back.
Jacoby Mathews, the No. 2 safety and No. 27 overall recruit in the 2022 class in the 247Sports composite, has decommitted from Ed Orgeron and the Tigers. He took to Twitter to announce the news.
“First off, I want to thank the man above and the entire staff at LSU. To all the Tiger fans and commits, it will forever be love whether we get together there or battle on Saturdays,” Mathews said on Twitter.
“After deep consideration, my parents and I have thought a lot through and I have decided to decommit from Louisiana State University and re-open my recruitment. Respect it, please and thank you.”

This is a massive loss for Ed Orgeron and the Tigers. Not only is Jacoby Mathews a five-star prospect – he’d also been committed since April. Now, he’s reopening his recruitment.
Mathews is a Louisiana native, so it’ll be interesting to see how he moves forward in his recruitment. It’s likely he stays in SEC territory, but a few Pac-12 schools may also be in the mix.
Mathews announced a final six of Arizona State, Clemson, Florida, LSU, Texas and USC. Could a West Coast program pluck the five star out of SEC territory? It could happen.
The reality is Mathews likely sticks in the SEC. But don’t expect to learn anything new about his recruitment for several months.
