Will Campbell makes history as the highest drafted offensive linemen in LSU history
Will Campbell didn’t have to wait long to hear his name called by Roger Goodell.
Campbell was picked fourth overall by the New England Patriots in Thursday’s NFL Draft. Campbell is the first former Tiger offensive linemen to go in the first round since Alan Faneca went 26th overall to Pittsburgh. Campbell now holds the distinction as the highest drafted LSU offensive linemen in program history.
Campbell was everything you could have hoped for from high school recruit. He lived up to his five-star status and then some, taking over the starting left tackle job basically from the moment he set foot on campus. Campbell was a two-time All-SEC selection and earned All-American honors in 2024; Campbell also earned freshman All-American accolades in 2022.
Campbell started all 38 games that he suited up for and didn’t allow Jayden Daniels to be sacked at all during Daniels’ Heisman-winning 2023 season. Campell had a streak of 24 consecutive games without allowing a sack over his three seasons in Baton Rouge. This past season he won a share of the SEC’s Jacobs Blocking Trophy which is given annually to the conference’s best offensive lineman; he shared the honor with Texas’ Kelvin Banks and was the first Tiger to win the award since La’el Collins in 2014.
Campbell also of course wore the No. 7 jersey…err patch the past two years and is the program’s first offensive linemen to earn the prestigious albeit slightly cursed number. He’s on the shortlist of greatest LSU offensive linemen in school history, and now he’s off to New England to protect Drake Maye’s blindside.
