Large order of Freys coming soon to the Crawford Boxes
With LSU’s run of pitchers over, ironically the first position player off the board from last season’s team hardly ever played a position.
Ethan Frey heard his name called at the tail end of round three of Sunday’s MLB Draft. Frey went 95th overall to the Houston Astros, a mere 2:45 drive from his hometown of Rosepine.
Injuries limited Frey in his first two seasons with the Tigers, but he finally showed what he can do in 2025. Frey hit .331 with 15 doubles, a triple, 13 home runs, 50 RBI and scored 43 runs. In Omaha, Frey scored a team-leading six runs, and had an on-base percentage of .391.
Frey wouldn’t have been picked where he was unless a deal with Houston was in place, so heading into 2026 LSU has a massive hole in the power department. LSU was always going to lose Bear Jones, but now with Frey gone to pro ball, the Tigers will really have to look for a power bat.
But instead of worrying about the future, let’s celebrate Frey, a kid that Jay Johnson always had faith in, and he rewarded him in a big way this summer. Remember, Frey is the one who sparked LSU’s rally against Little Rock in the winner take all game with a bases-clearing double to cut the Trojan lead from 5-1 to 5-4. Without that knock, LSU might have suffered it’s worst loss in program history. Now he’s off to pro ball with two national championship rings on his fingers.
Frey is the fourth Tiger to hear his name called Sunday night. He joins Kade Anderson (3rd, Seattle), Chase Shores (47th, Anaheim), and Anthony Eyanson (87th, Boston).
